'Mysterious Island' Manga

Back in the day when I had my original and completely finished 'The Guardian' story still on this site, I found another facet to explore in the Pokémon Minami world. I wanted to write another story - but this time put it in another format: Manga! And thus the 'Mysterious Island' manga was born, a story set after the events of 'The Guardian' and also millennia before it once events really got rolling. (It makes sense, really...)

Anyway, once I decided to rewrite 'The Guardian', 'Mysterious Island' was put on hold indefinitely, and during that time I managed to get a new program dedicated to drawing digital manga. So once I finish the new updated Guardians story I'm going to redo and complete this one.

In any case, here are the first six pages of the original manga which I started. I am aware of their infinite flaws, believe me. I know about the style changes regarding colour and shading and skill. It was not really a project I did over a short space of time so there are stylistic differences between each page. Also, I can't draw Celebi at all. Not even with proper reference... *sigh*

Please note that these files are quite big. Woe betide those with a slow connection if you click for the larger image in order to actually read it. Loading might take you a while, and I'm not sure the result will be worth it.

Also please note that whilst I do confess to being a bit of a manga purist in terms of true Japanese manga by true manga-ka, I have drawn this in left-to-right format and as such, please read it as you would a western comic. That way, instead of Trinyte saying "Heh. Good question" completely out of the blue, he's actually replying to Solsan's question. ^^' ありがとう、みんあーさん!

Page One: The Splash Page. Ah, I was so proud of this. I still am a little, but now that Gramistle is Wisprout, it looks like I'm going to have to make a few changes at least to this one. Yin and Yang's convo before the huge panel is merely setting the plotline into place - they don't actually talk to each other till a little later. And anyone who can correctly identify all 12 Elements to the symbols gets a cookie. Not that it's tricky if you use the deduction method.
Page Two. Setting the scene on Johto's shores. Greenwitan is contacted by the Time Lord and recruited to go save Minami yet again, this time from the anonymous 'arch nemesis Timeless One'. (Who will it end up being? Guess correctly and get two cookies. I'll even give you a hint - they're displayed somewhere on the main section of this site.) Because Dialga is wimpy like that... :3 On a side note, I just played Mystery Dungeon 2 up to the point where Primal Dialga and Celebi come into the mix. I'm tempted to spin this scene a little out now and perhaps incorporate something from MD2 into it along the way...
Page Three. Again, more scene setting... Although, I love this page as well. Even my mum (who doesn't think too fondly of Pokémon and my apparent addiction to it ten years after its release) spotted the tree sketch when I was colouring it on the computer and remarked that she really liked it. Huzzah! One for the team! Anyway, this new scene starts back in Minami straight after the (old) epilogue to 'The Guardian' when Solsan and Trinyte are just getting reunited again.
Page Four. Eww... too much text, not enough space to put it in. Had to cut it down as it was and everything still manages to look squished. Oh well, at least things start getting moving now.
Page Five. A huge style change in this one. I think it had a lot to do with where the sketch came from. Previously, I'd been scanning in pencilled stuff. This one was done entirely digitally. A little rough around the edges is this page... especially in terms of the horrible looking humans... I'm better now, promise!
Page Six. Just when two scenes collide, and Greenwitan (Serebii, Celebi, whatever) comes to try and stop things before they go any further, I take its advice and don't go any further... just kidding. In actual fact, I think I just never got round to properly sketching the new page (I did have extremely bad extremely rough things that were more of a guideline but they were hardly scannable). And then I decided to revise 'The Guardian', so that's when the manga completely went out the window. Rest assured it will be back. Eventually. I need to finish the first story first. :3
